In the very beginning there was just the Unquachaugs. Then in the 1600’s along came the Woodhulls, Floyds, and Smiths. They wound up with most of Mastic along with a handfull of “their neighbors” from Setauket like the Eburnes, Edsalls, etc that owned small parcels. When things got sticky and boundary disputes started to arise among the small parcel owners, William “Tangier” Smith made them offers they couldn’t refuse and annexed it to his Manor of St. George holdings.

The BIG THREE ( W, F, & S ) did not make it any easier when they started inter marrying with each other and families like the Jones, Floyd – Jones, Nicoll, Robert, Fanning, Lawrence, and others . Nor by giving many of their children (of which there were many) very similar and sometimes the same names. eg. Egbert T. Smith and Egbert Tangier Smith. Both were born in Mastic , but one lived most of his life in Napa, California the other at The Manor of St. George. Which Egbert do you think lived at the Manor of St, George (not to be corn – fused with St. George’s Manor in Setauket ) with the rest of the Tangier Smiths and had four children known as : William E. T. , Martha T,. Clarence G. T, and Eugenia A. T, Smith

If you answered Egbert Tangier Smith, you would be off by about 3,500 miles.

Also for some time I thought that Egbert T. Smith and Charles Jefferey Smith, aka known as E.T.Smith & C. J. Smith, who both owned large estates on Mastic Neck during most of the same period in the 1800’s, were brothers. Not exactly ……

Then I read that they were cousins. Now it seems to finally appear that they were half brothers. William “Point Billy” Tangier Smith was their father and their mothers were Point Billy’s 1st & 3rd wives, Elizabeth who was General Woodhull’s daughter and Hannah who was a Carman, from just up the river!
