Text | Dear Mr. Dietz, I happened on your Website today! I grew up on Beaverdam Road/corner of Meadow Lane. My father's family, the Nelsons - have been in Brookhaven since 1906 when Alfred Nelson bought the Ketcham house. He named it 'Middlebrook Farm' and my grand aunt Ethel lived there until she died in 1966. My interest is in the history of the house - You show a photo taken ca 1888 by Jake Valentine (Image ID 201) . The original house was built in the mid to late 1700's I believe, by Scudder Ketcham. The newer/higher part of the house was either added on or moved and attached. This would have been done by either Isaac or Timothy. I was delighted to see the picture as it confirms what I had suspected - that the house in the photo was moved back and attached. I am assuming the photo is at Post-Morrow and on my next visit I shall find it and examine it more closely. You have a wondrous Site! Thanks so much. Sincerely, Lucia Nelson 318 Valley Road North Berwick, ME 03906 Tel/Fax 207 676-3712 ================ Dear John, Thank you for the prompt reply as well as for the information on the Ketcham Family. In the course of researching the history of the Ketcham House I found myself delving into the Ketcham family. David Overton and Mallory Leoniak at the Patchogue Town Hall were a great help - for instance they have a copy of 1797 Isaac Hulse Map which clearly shows the location of the Ketcham house ('Parsonage, Hulses, Ketchams'). Records of the Town of Brookhaven Book A 1690 - 1798 page 253 [113] states that 'At a meeting of the Trustees of the freeholders and Commonality of the Town of Brookhaven held this 5th Day of August 1793..............Trustees did grant and Sell to Isaac Ketcham a Certain Piece of upland and swamp...etc'. In July of 1990 I reviewed 'The Miller Collection' which is at the Post-Morrow Foundation. In Box RG7 Series 4 is a deed dated 1793. ''Trustees Deed for Beaverdam Stream at Swamp - 1793 to Isaac Ketcham" Signed: Joseph Strong, Isaac White and Selah Strong, President. Fee: 3£ 18 shillings. It is an original and in fragile condition. Through Richard Baldwin at the Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead I obtained a copy of his 1994 correspondence with Ned Smith, which I send to you. I use Family Tree Maker for my work and have entered what I know regarding the Ketcham Family, in particular the 'Descendants of Isaac Ketcham'. I will include this, as well as various pieces of information that you might find interesting. in 'Notes for Isaac Ketcham' I say that Isaac and his son Scudder seem to have come to Fire Place, now Brookhaven from Huntington, in about 1792. There are records of land bought by Isaac during that period. Isaac married Freelove Carll 28 April 1760 at St. George's Episcopal Church, Hempstead, NY. Scudder was born 15 March 1761 in Huntington and died 06 January 1799, Fire Place. He married Elizabeth Rose 15 November 1789.....and so on. You ask who owned the farm when my family bought it in 1906. I did some checking at the County Office and it seems that some of the property belonged to the Miller family. Shortly afterwards I launched into another Nelson Family project, this involving property owned by Alfred and Emily in Southampton. And that is where I left it. Cynthia Monroe is a friend and when she sold the property to the Eisenhardts I thought of working on it again but just never got back to it. re your Brookhaven Hamlet sight, I have forwarded the link to my brothers and my children. It is truly remarkable, clearly you have done a great deal of work and we are all in your debt. I will send along copies of some items mentioned above. If you have questions, comments please tell me. I expect to be in Brookhaven come summer - my brother Norm Nelson and his wife Sally live in The Barn at 2 Meadow Lane. Perhaps you know Norm? Best, Lucia | |
