Text | I have been working with Lillian Fais from Suffolk Co to come up with some more information on the Marist Bros property, especially the house. We have each made a trip to Riverhead, and have various deeds and maps. Right now I am leaning on the theory that the house was built by Cornelius and Elizabeth Corson, late nineteenth century. The 1887 tax records show they owned a 35 acre parcel in Brookhaven and a 5 acre parcel in Brookhaven, in addition to a 1/2 acre in Bellport. From newspaper records, they appear to be Brooklynites who summered out in Patchogue, Bellport and Brookhaven. In 1887, Elizabeth sold a parcel to Maria Fairchild and sold another parcel to her (So side of road) in 1890. The 1896 map clearly shows a Corson house on the north side of the road, with Fairchilds owning the lot (without a structure on it to the west) AND the Fairchild house on the south side of the road. Interesting. Trying to put it together, but hoping you might know something about Cornelius and Elizabeth Corson. They are listed on the 1900 census living in Brookhaven, probably retired as he is 74 and she 66. Here is another little tidbit: Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame Annex in NYC has a letter written by Paul Simon to Art Garfunkel in the early 1950's from Camp Washington Lodge in Bellport, LI. It was advertised in the NY Times as a "fabulous family resort". I have read your info on this property, but in light of some newer leads, I am leaning toward the Corson family. Also found a very confusing article about Everett Price moving 3 houses, one of which belonged to Cornelius Corson - you can read it at the Brooklyn Eagle Jan 19, 1901 pg 17. Your feedback here would be very valuable. Barbara M. Russell Town of Brookhaven Historian (631) 451-8038 brussell@ brookhaven.org |
