Text | April 15, 1924. Mrs. Frances M. (Mary) Burnett Widow of George Burnett, died Tuesday at the home of her son, Isaac Burnett, in Brookhaven, being 97 years old. Despite her great age, she was until very recently, an active woman and was a familiar figure to passerbys working in her garden on Beaver Dam Road. The funeral is to be held this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the house with service in charge of the Rev. Frederick E. Allen and internment in the Woodland (sic) Cemetery, Bellport. Mrs. Burnett was born at Westhampton, October 10, 1826, daughter of Enoch (Jagger) and Phebe Conklin. She made her home in Brookhaven many years. She leaves four sons, Isaac, Hubert, and Theron of Brookhaven, and Jefferson of Flushing and a daughter, Mrs. Hand, of Bridgehampton. [This reference is a typewritten copy of the original. There are a number of ambiguities. It is not clear whether the date is the date of publication of the newspaper or the date of death -- April 15, 1924 being a Tuesday. Since the funeral "is to be held this afternoon" I believe the date of newspaper publication is probably after April 15, perhaps the following Thursday (Thursday being a popular date for publishing weeklies), and that the the April 15 date is is the actual date of death. Her birth surname is also ambiguous, giving her parents as "Enoch (Jagger) and Phebe Conklin." I believe that the parenthetical "Jagger" belongs with Phebe, not Enoch, and that her maiden name was Conklin.] | |
