Text | HI, my name is Walter Clay ROSE and David Eustice sent your note on to me. If you have those early Brookhaven records, then you know that Jane was first married to a William Williams who evidently died quite soon after they were married. Later, she married Jonathan ROSE and their marriage is a matter of record. If I recall correctly, she was shown as Jane Williams, widow, in those marriage records and some have shown her maiden name to be Nearon but I have NO PROOF of that fact. Torrey lists her maiden name as Hearn. Evidently, she was married to William Williams on Nov. 9, 1678, at Gravesend, Long Island by Justice Nicholas Stillwell whose descendants traveled to many areas with this ROSE family. Jane was married to Jonathan ROSE on 28 May, 1682, at Brookhaven by a Nathaniel Bruster officiating according to the records I have for them. It is believed that Jonathan & Jane's oldest son, Thomas ROSE, was born about 1683 as he is buying land soon after 1700 and remained in that area all his life. His sons are believed to have been Nathan ROSE, Sr.; Samuel, and Ephrian but the last two may have been his brothers instead. In 1720, Jonathan ROSE deeded lands of inheritance to four sons it seems. These were Samuel, Ephriam, Timothy, and Ezekiel ROSE. Sameul is thought to have gone to Little Egg Harbor and Ephriam to Tuckertown, NJ; Timothy may be the one in Morris County, NJ; and Ezekiel is probably the Ezekiel of Hunterdon County, NJ. In addition to Thomas, there was a Robert ROSE selling land in the Brookhaven area in the 1720s and 1730s who was also thought to be Jonathan's son. In the 1721 time period, there is a note where a Jonathan ROSE lost his earmark because he had moved away and in the 1730s & 1740s, a Jonathan ROSE was witnessing Wills up in Orange County New York. It is also thought that Jonathan had a son named Daniel so this would be a total of eight possible sons: Thomas Jonathan, Jr. Timothy Robert Samuel Ezekiel Daniel Ephriam I'm NOT certain I've been much help to you but maybe you can find these same references in those old records. There was a court case in 1728 which involved Samuel & Ephriam and they evidently removed from that area in the 1730 time period as they show up in Burlington County, NJ, about that time. ---------------------------------- Some show this Robert to be the son of the Robert who married Margery Evehard but they are two seperate Roberts and are NOT related according to the DNA test results. This Robert of Long Island doesn't match up with any other ROSE in the database to date. He was known to be in Lynn, Mass., in 1638, and was one of the first NINE settlers of Easthampton in the 1640s. He died there about 1652. If you have access to the George Miller Papers of November, 1657, you will find the listing of all of Robert and Dorothy's children except for Rachel who married Anthony Waters, an Attorney, who became the Clerk of Court and Register of Deeds for Queens County, NY. He died in 1675 leaving Rachel and a large family which can be found on the Internet. In a court case of 2 Oct., 1655, in the Southhampton area, John refers to Anthony as his brother as I recall so this is why we know that Rachel ROSE married Anthony Waters. This would be the John who married Abigail Raynor & they lived in the Southhampton area all their lives. Their family is quite well documented from those early days. The Waters family data show Rachel's parents as Robert & Dorothy ROSE of Easthampton so that seems quite certain to be where she fits in. These are the names of the children of Robert & Dorothy, we believe: Rachel born about 1634 & married Anthony Waters Thomas born about 1636 & md. (1) Miss White (2) Hester Burnett John born about 1638 & married Abigail Raynor Samuel born about 1640 & nothing more known of him after 1657. Mary born about 1642 & nothing more known of her after 1657. Jonathan born about 1645 & married the widow, Jane Williams. The Waters family is quite well documented as well as the John ROSE family but the others have very little documentation. Since Jonathan is an early settler of the Fire Place/Bellport area, the entries in records of that area are quite likely those of his descendants. Thomas' family was in the Southhampton area it appears from those early records. His first wife was thought to be the daughter of John White & Ann Cooper. The father of his second wife is thought to be a Thomas Burnett. Abigail Raynor is said to be the daughter of Thurston Raynor & Martha Wood. I believe that she was named in her father's Will. The widow, Jane Wiliams, is thought to be the wife of a William Williams who evidently died soon after their marriage in 1678. She remarried Jonathan ROSE in 1682 so she may have had small children when she married as there is a William Williams in the records of Brookhaven after 1682. The children of Jonathan Rose & Jane (Nearon) Williams are believed to be: Thomas, born about 1683 & married Rebecca Reeve, d/o Thomas Reeve Robert, bonn about 1684 & married an Abigail, we think. Daniel, born about 1686 & married a lady named Mary, we think. Jonathan, Jr., born before 1700 and may have gone to Orange County, NY before 1721 as his lost his "earmark" for moving away. Samuel, born before 1700 and md. Anna Duckworth, d/o William & Grace. He removed to the Little Egg Harbor, NJ area before 1735. Ephriam, born before 1700 and removed to the Tuckertown area of NJ? Timothy, born before 1700 and removed to Morris County, PA, we think. Ezekiel, born before 1799 and married Mary Fidler, d/o John & Sarah. He removed to the Hunterdon County, NJ, area between 1735-40. There is a Deed of Inheritance to Samuel, Ephriam, Timothy, and Ezekiel in the records of Suffolk County, NY, in the 1720 time period from Jonathan. A court record of 1728 names Samuel & Ephriam with Timothy is a witness. Thomas and Daniel seem to have remained in the Bellport area with Robert going to Hunterdon County, NJ, where he died about 1743. Jonathan seems to have gone to Orange County, NY by 1721 for he lost his "earmark" for removing from the area of Bellport and there was a Jonathan ROSE witnessing Wills in Orange County in 1737 & 1741. Some of the John ROSE & Abigail descendants were also there in the 1730s time period based on their family records. Jonathan was in Haverstraw and John's descendants were in Goshen. As you can see, MOST of our JONATHAN family is based on records from the Bellport area prior to 1750 as that seems to be where his family lived before removing to New Jersey and New York. John's family lived in the Southampton area so that is how I am able to seperate them based on the records. Each family has very similar names so seperating them by where they live appears to be the best tool to use in trying to place them. Maybe you can find some of these old records and arrive at your own conclusions about how they fit in the family tree. The DNA testing of descendants PROVE that Jonathan & his family are related to John and his descendants. We have descendants of an Israel ROSE, a Matthias ROSE, and a William ROSE who were the Orange County, NY, that match with the Samuel ROSE & Anna Duckworth family of the Little Egg Harbor area of New Jersey. They also match with descendants of Ezekiel ROSE and Mary Fidler and with other ROSEs whom we think are descended from the Robert who married an Abigail so the DNA confirms there is some relationship among our large group of Long Island ROSEs. It doesn't tell us how we all fit into the tree, however! Maybe this will give you some new data to "chew" on and review to reach your own conclusions about how things should be. If we can be of further assistance, just let us know. | |
