Text | Hi John, Well, I'm back on Long Island and yet again snooping around in Brookhaven Hamlet with a question for you! I've spent some time at the Suffolk County Clerks office tracing the chain of title for Squassux Landing. What we know (the Post-Morrow Foundation and I) is that James H. Post's daughters deeded the land to the BVA in 1945 - being the same premises conveyed to James H. Post by Carman R. Lush in 1917, being the same premises conveyed to Carman R. Lush by Edward Carman and his wife Isabella and Joseph Carman and his wife Eliza in 1907 (Deed Liber 609, page 370-372). I photocopied this deed today, and will scan it shortly so that it can be archived at Post-Morrow (I can send it along your way, too, if interested). The land is described in this deed (really interesting). However, it did not refer me to the prior deed, in which one of the Carmans would have been the grantee (the receiver). I looked in the grantee index, and only found one reference - this to Joseph Carman. He received some land from Samuel Carman in May of 1867 (Deed Liber 144, page 384). This deed, in which it appears that Samuel and Caty Carman are the parents of Joseph, convey three parcels of land to Joseph. One parcel is described as "all premises made and executed by Zephamiah Conklin and Desire, his wife, to Joseph Homan on March 10, 1802," another as "all the premises made and executed by Robert Hawkins, Jr. to said Joseph Homan dated March 24, 1807," and the third being "all the premises made and executed by Samuel A. Hawkins and Eliza his wife to Samuel Carman dated April 22, 1836." Perhaps Squassux Landing is contained within one of these three described parcels? I was not able to find any of the three land grants, as the prior deed references were not given nor were any of the above grantees/grantors listed in the grantee/grantor indexes for Brookhaven Town. What do you know about Samuel Carman's land holdings in Fireplace Neck? Thanks for your help, Jayme |
