Notes:
This eastern Long Island towns and communities had an early affinity with the colonies of Connecticut, particularly New Haven and Hartford. This relationship continued long after Long Island came under the jurisdiction of the Province of New York—especially with respect to commercial and familial relationships.
Therefore, New Haven, CT is frequently identified by sources as a fact place. While most of the time this identification no doubt means the Town/City, this identification by itself is ambiguous, and could more broadly mean the colony's (or the somewhat later county's) jurisdiction. I have chosen to deviate from my standard notational practice of identifying places by "community," "town," "county," state/province" unless the context of the fact information clearly points otherwise.
