Brookhaven has lost one of its best loved residents in Nathaniel Clinton Miller, who died suddenly on Sunday afternoon on the beach at Smith Point where he spent most of his time during the last few years. He lived alone there in a little shack and enjoyed the fishing and taking care of the wild ducks which have been trained to come in there.
Our own memories of "Clint" Miller, as he was affectionately called by all who knew him, go back to earliest childhood. Squatting on his heels, a basket containing a heterogeneous collection of odds and ends beside him, he used to tell us tales of shipwrecks, smuggling and adventure. He also knew a great deal of local history and amusing happenings in the community. Always kind, always generous, Mr. Miller was welcome everywhere. Years ago when St. James P.E. church held its annual fair under a large tent on the church lawn, Mr. Miller was always one of the most interested workers. He thought a great deal of his church and it was his earnest wish that he be buried from there. He will be greatly missed in the community.
St. James church was not large enough to hold all those who came to pay their last tribute Wednesday afternoon to the deceased. The organ was played by Mrs. Florence Gwynne and Dr. Frederick W. Peters read the service and Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar." The pall-bearers were Jacob L. Valentine, Forrest P. Reeve, Desmond Nelson and Charles E. Robinson. Members of Coast Guard station at Smith Point, where Mr. Miller so loved to be, attended the service. The committal service was at the Brookhaven cemetery, where he was interred.
