UPHOLDS PLEDGE TO SHUN LIQUOR
Village Philosopher Raps Scoffers and Denies Even Sipping Grape Juice.
Patchogue, L.I., July 32.—There are many persons in this village who are disinclined to believe that a man can abstain from liquor for any considerable period. At least, some scoffers have intimated that Arlington H. Carman, lawyer, litterateur, philosopher and publicist, of this town, has not kept a pledge made two years and nine months ago that his lips would not be stained by rum from that time henceforth.
Mr. Carman to-day issued the following document in denial:
AFFIDAVIT OF SOBRIETY
State of New York, County of Suffolk, ss.—Arlington H. Carman, being first duly sworn, deposes and says that, wheras divers and various rumors, whisperings, innuendoes and insinuations have come to his notice and attention concerning his dalliance with the juice of the fruitful grape and of the budding rye, this dissonant says that he has not directly or indirectly touched, tasted nor handled any alcoholic beverage since the first week in November, nineteen hundred and eleven. This result has been accomplished under doctrine of free will and this affidavit is made to quiet the title of deponent as a prohibitionists in practice and perhaps help some one. Sworn before me this 6th day of July, 1914.
ESTELLE W. HAWKINS, Notary Public.
(Seal) Suffolk County, N. Y.
As an introduction to his affidavit Mr. Carman quotes an adaptation from Johann Caspar Lavanter, the Swiss poet and theologian, as follows:
"Who without cause or reason industriously recalls the remembrance of past errors to the detriment of him who has repented of them is a villain."
