'MISS ELLA' ROSE HAWKINS PASSES AWAY AT AGE 83

Brookhaven—Brookhaven Village lost a member of one of the oldest fanilies with the death of Miss Ella Rose Hawkins, 83, of Beaver Dam Road, in Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, Tuesday morning, after a short illness.

Miss Hawkins was the daughter of the late Selah Hawkins and Alma Parks Hawkins. Her great-grandfather, Selah, was born in Setauket in 1775 and married Rachael Rose of Brookhaven in 1818. Like most early settlers of the Town of Brookhaven on the North shore, the Hawkins family acquired land from the Indians on the South shore because of the salt hay and grass obtainable there.

In 1818, Selah came to live in Fireplace, as Brookhaven Village was known until 1871. His property extended from the Great South Bay north beyond Beaver Dam Road. His son, Lewis, left the property to his two sons, Henry Egbert and Selah. Much of it was subsequently sold. Only that on the south side of Beaver Dam Road and along Hawkins Lane remains in the family.

"Miss Ella" taught school in Brooklyn for a number of years, dividing her time between her apartment there and her home in Brookhaven. Since her retirement some years ago, she has spent her Summers here and maintained a keen keen interest in all community affairs.

She was a member of the Col. Josiah Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Fireplace Literary Club from early in its beginning in 1913.

She served first as volunteer librarian and later as a member of the board of directors. Her chief interest has been the Brookhaven Free Library, which she has served devotedly as trustee and treasurer of the Brookhaven Free Library Association for many years. She was also a member of the book committee.

While "Miss Ella's" parents were members of the Methodist Church here (now the Presbyterian), she became a member of the Baptist Church in Brooklyn and was a director of the Baptist Home for the Aged.

Services will be held a 2 p.m. today in the Brookhaven Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles A. Kellogg, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Frederick I. Smith, pastor of the Bellport Methodist Church. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery, Bellport. Arrangements were made by Ruland's Funeral Home.
