Stephen Austin was listed in the 1790 Federal Census Huntington Township, Suffolk County, New York. He lived with his family next to Abraham Brinkerhoff, (probably his father-n-law. In the 1800 Federal Census Stephen Austin is listed with his family still living next to Abraham Brinkerhoff.

This would be Abraham Brinkerhoff, a Dutch Landowner and father to Stephen Austin's wife Mary Brinkerhoff. When I was a boy in the 1920's and 1930's a large block of land---probably 25 or 30 acres----on the West side of South Great Neck Road was almost all Austin land. This land ran westward 600 to 700 feet to the east side of Howell's Creek. This block of land was south of the Montauk Highway and extended down to about where the road swings left to go to the public dock. Only a strip along Montauk Highway, part of which is now occupied by the shopping center, and one small house-sized plot further south were not Austin land.
