The following notes were written by Steve Henderson:
Daniel was born and spent his early years on his father's farm in Copiague. He worked with the Nostrand family at Manitou Hall on the Bethpage-Woodbury Road until he was 17 years old in 1809. He bacame a great horseman there and three years later in 1812 he went to Newtown. Long Island where he trained horses for Daniel Barre who was aide de camp to the commanding general. Daniel Barre was the Adjutant of the Sixty-Fourth Regiment from Kings County.
"Daniel lived for a few years in Kings County, being there engaged as a market-gardener, but eventually returned to Amityville." He lived on the Wynant Bennett farm (located on the corner of 3rd Ave. and Hamilton Ave.) in Bay Ridge, Kings County. The neighbors included the Bergens, Olaf Van Brunts, and the Cartelyous. His inlaws, Gilbert and Hannah Smith, lived in the same area and Gilbert named Wynant Bennet as one of the executors of his will.
In 1820 Daniel and his family lived near Abraham Brinkerhoff in the Town of Huntington. In 1830 he was between Israel Brush and Thomas Austin. Daniel Austin bought the George Jackson house and farm which was on Copiague (Great Neck) Creek (which later became the Henry Brush place) but they never lived there. Daniel, through his mother, inherited some of the land of the Brinkerhoff farm in Copiague, described as "E/s South Great Neck Road, 302.43 feet S/o Schmeelk Place, Copiague, N.Y." "Deed made by Daniel Austin and Deborah Austin, his wife, and Samuel Jackson and Catharine Jackson, his wife, dated 2 February 1839 recorded 19 March 1839 in Liber 30 Cp 434, (Said Daniel Austin through Mary Austin, Catharine Jackson and Abraham Brinkerhoff, being heirs of George Brinkerhoff, deceased, who was seized of a portion of the premises." In 1840 he lived near his brother Abraham Austin. In 18505 and I86011 he was near his brothers Abraham. Stephen, and Thomas Austin. He was still there in 1870. This was Huntington South; present day Copiague. He was a farmer with $2400 of real estate in 1850. He was still a farmer in I860. In the 1860 Federal Census he was listed with only $500 of real estate and $800 of personal property. However, in the 1860 U. S. Agricultural Census his farm was valued at $5000.It is likely that the Federal Census valuation was a mistake. The farm in 1860 consisted of 33 improved and 104 unimproved acres of land. The value of the farm implements and machinery was $100. As of 1 June 1860 the livestock consisted of 2 horses, 3 milch cows, 2 other cattle, and 5 swine for a value of $300. The produce for the year ending 1 June 1860 was 50 bushels of rye, 200 bushels of Indian corn, 100 bushels of oats, 80 bushels of Irish potatoes, 25 bushels of buckwheat, 200 Ibs of butter, and 12 tons of hay. The value of animals slaughtered was $100.13 According to the 1870 Federal Census he had $5000 of real estate and $1375 of personal property.12 In 1870 the farm had 30 acres of improved land, 100 acres of woodland, and 10 acres of other unimproved land with a value of $5000. The machinery was worth $200. The livestock consisted of 3 horses, 2 milch cows, 1 cattle, and 3 swine with a combined value of $575. The produce was 30 bushels of wheat, 20 bushels of rye, 100 bushels of Indian corn, 15 bushels of buckwheat, 172 bushels of Irish potatoes, 200 Ibs of butter, and 40 tons of hay with a combined value of $1349.14 In addition to being a farmer, Daniel could make his own boots and shoes like his father did.3 Daniel was a Democrat.

The following notes were written by Steve Henderson:
Eliza Hulse was married by Rev. George Tomlinson to Daniel Austin on 15 February 1843 in Fire Place, Brookhaven Town.3 She was with Daniel in Copiague in 18505, I8601', and 1870 when she was listed as keeping house.12 Lavenia Hulse (age 44 in I860" and age 50 in I86012) was living with them. She was probably a sister of Eliza. In 1860 Lavenia was listed as a tailoress11 and in 1870 was listed as having no occupation.12 In 1880 Eliza was living with her son Stephen in the Town of Babylon.16 This was probably the family farm in Copiague.
