"Sudden Death of Edward Overton, One of the Oldest Citizens of Patchogue."
"Patchogue, May 10--Edward Overton, one of the oldest residents of East Patchogue, died suddenly on Saturday of apoplexy. Mr. Overton was born here April 24, 1827, in the old homestead, where he died. The house is the oldest in this vicinity. It is situated near the Dunton Lake and was purchased by Mr. Overton's grandfather in 1802, with one square mile of land, for $3000. The deceased was a farmer by occupation, and a man of sound business judgement, whose counsel was eagerly sought by many of his neighbors. Mr. Overton was a musician of note. He was a cornetist and helped organize the first brass band in Suffolk County, at Patchogue. He also sang in the Patchogue Congregtional Church choir for several years. He was a well known temperance advocate. In March, 1867, he married Miss Mary Glover of South Haven, who survives him. Their only child is Dr. Frank Overton of Patchogue. The funeral was held to-day from the homestead and the interment was at Bellport."
