Richard Browne, known as Lieutenant, was born in England cir. 1629 and emigrated to Massachusetts; then to Long Island where he had a home lot in Southold, L.I., NY, prior to 15 Mar 1659 -- Southold, Southampton and Gardiner's Island being the earliest settlements by the English in New York State; the oldest being by the Dutch at Albany and New York City. Lieut. Browne's home lot was located at the east end of Town Street, in the Village of Southold, Town of Southold, Suffolk County, N.Y. He sold the lot in 1665 to Elnathan Topping and removed to Oyster Ponds, now Orient, L.I., where he and his son, Richard, built a large double house. When this house was repaired in later years, there was a weather vane put on the peak of the roof, marked with the date, 1691. The house stood until 1837 when Noah G. Beebe, who then owned the property, tore it down and erected a house on the site.
Richard Browne was the first and sole owner of the whole of the southwest end of Orient, then called Oyster Ponds, which included the site of the old cemetery. It is estimated that his lands were at least one thousand acres, but it is difficult to compute the exact acreage because of the uncertain location of some of the boundaries. Deeds for these properties are recorded between the years 1662 and 1674 in the Southold Town records and in the Suffolk County Clerk's office in Riverhead, L.I., New York.
In 1662, he was a freeman of Connecticut, as Southold at that period was under the jurisdiction of that Colony and remained so until 1664, when the grant of King Charles II to his brother, James, Duke of York, made all of Long Island a part of the Province of New York. In the rate list of 1675, Richard Browne was the richest man in the Town of Southold. In 1670, he was Sergeant; on June 13, 1685 he was made Ensign, and on October 8, 1686, he was listed as one of the Lieutenants of a Foot Troop of Suffolk County Militia. (Note: Ensign was what is now the modern equivalent of 1st Lieutenant in the Army.)
He m. before 1651, Hannah, dau. of William and Dorothy King [sic., then spelled Kinge] of Salem, Mass., and Southold, L.I. She outlived him. On Feb. 11, 1686, he put all his property into the hands of his son-in-law, John Tuthill**, in trust stipulating that he and his wife, Dorothy*, should occupy his home until their deaths. This indicates his failing health. He died shortly afterward but the exact date is not known. Both he and Dorothy* are undoubtedly buried in the Old Orient Cemetery, but if they had tombstones, these may be among those sacrilegiously removed and piled up in a heap when part of the cemetery was torn up and the stone wall bordering one side was removed, a long time ago.
* This account is ambiguous. Note that just previous it was indicated that Hannah Kinge was his wife, daughter of William and Dorothy Kinge. Perhaps these are typographical errors. No source has been found that indicates that he had a second wife, Dorothy.
** The John Tutthill to whom Richard entrusted his family and estate was not the John Tutthill mentioned here, but rather a neighbor and friend, John Tutthill [i]; this John's wife Deliverance Kinge was a sibling to Hannah Kinge, Richard's wife. A John Tutthill does marry into the family, marrying Richard's granddaughter Elizabeth by his son Jonathan. This John Tutthill [iii] was John Tutthill's [i] grandson.
