  He was a merchant in Halifax, and a member of the Provincial Assembly of Nova Scotia from 1765 to his death. Ruth Smith comments: "Thompson's statement* that 'he had a son Henry Smith, merchant in Halifax, who inherited the property of William Henry Smith in Brookhaven' obviously confuses William's bro.
