Tiger Dies; Prominent Landscaper. Vernon E. Tiger, 76, veteran nursery man and landscape architect, died March 22 in the Berkshire Nursing Home, West Babylon, after a lengthy illness. Born April 3, 1890, in East Patchogue, where he lived for about 45 years, he joined his father, the late Mosses Tiger, when he was only 19, assisting him as a landscaper. He later moved to Brookhaven, where with the late Walter Corrigan, [he] established the Tiger Nursery. He had been living in Babylon for the past four years at 12 Blanchard Street. Mr. Tiger was known for his landscaping of such prominent landmarks as the Vanderbilt Estate, now Adelphi Suffolk College, and La Salle Military Academy, both in Oakdale. He had also been associated with Oaknok Nursery in West Islip, from which he retired in 1963, and with the Swan River Nursery in East Patchogue for many years. He was descended from two early settlers of Long Island, the John Tuthill family of Southold, and Tangier Smith of the Manor of St. George in Mastic. Funeral services were held Friday in the Chapey Funeral Home, West Islip, and interment followed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Patchogue. Surviving are his second wife, Mary; two sons, Vernon Jr. and John, and a daughter, Susanne.
