- [S283] Personal Remembrances of Emily Wagner and Ellen Learned by Faith McCutcheon, Interviewed 2006.
Phebe [Faith McCutcheon's sister] gave me a lot more information about Emily Wagner and Ellen Learned:
Emily applied at John Hopkins to be a doctor and was accepted. She didn't go because she thought she could do more good at the Henry Street Settlement where she taught music instrments etc. to the welfare children
It was there that she met Ellen Learned who taught voice. They first had a house on Beaver Dam Road which went to the bank. Later they scraped up enough money to build the house they lived in in the woods. Nellie took care of the gardens and Emily the house. They had many cats, and a dog. Ellen taught voice for opera stars in N.Y. and Emily taught piano, and instruments. She taught Phebe the cello, me piano. If you hit the wrong note she hit your fingers with a pencil. Ellen taught choir in our Episcopal Church. Her father was a minister somewhere.
They helped struggling artists, an interior decorator, a woman who did monologues, etc. etc.
