- [This Samuel Terrill (or Terrell) of Milford, CT, and his line, are included in the Hamlet People database because of circumstantial evidence that he may be the Samuel Terrill who originally purchased Yaphank Neck (modern South Haven Hamlet, NY) in 1688 from the indigenous native Wopehege. While one source has suggested that the Samuel Terrill who made this purchase was a son of Thomas Terrell of Southold, NY, I have not found any other source which supports this suggestion, nor have I yet found a single Samuel Terrill of Southold which could be the Samuel Terrill who purchased Yaphank Neck. Samuel's brother Thomas apparently does remove to East Hampton, NY for a while before finally settling in Elizabeth, NJ; but I have found no children of him named Samuel; and they would be too young in any event to have made the 1688 Yaphank Neck purchase. Another source suggested that Samuel Terrell was of "East Hampshire," (England?) without any supporting evidence.]
[Some compilations combine this Samuel Terrill (i) with his son Samuel (ii), eliminating a generation. Recorded here is the genealogy as presented by Susan Woodruff Abbott. Given the c. 1647 birth date for this Samuel, the 1710 marriage date of "Samuel" to Abigail Baldwin, and the birth date of their son Samuel (10 Sep 1711), it seems more likely that there is an intermediate "Samuel" generation, i.e., that Abbott is likely correct.]
[A correspondent, Libbet Terrell, suggested that Samuel had a son, Adam Terrill (see), perhaps based on inferences from an unsourced notes by Josef Schrabal on the history of Center Moriches.]
