    • [As far as so far determined, the Salem Corwin family line of Bellport, NY is not closely linked, if linked at all, to the Richard Corwin family of Brookhaven Hamlet, NY.]

      The following note was appended to the Salem Corwin data entry at LongIslandGenealogy.com. I have therefore removed Samuel Corwin and Kezia Young as Salem Corwin's parents.

      t appears there is some confusion about Salem Corwin (1806 - 1884). I ordered a death certificate from the Brookhaven Town Records some years ago, and it lists Salems father as Samuel Corwin and his mother as Kezia Youngs. After further research and talking with the people at the Town Clerks office in Brookhaven, it appears this was an error. This is more than likely not his parentage.

      I am still researching it, but as of now, the official town death records show his parentage as:

      Father: Samuel Carman, NY State
      Mother: Eunice Corwin, Bellport

      In a seperate handwritten book (that the Brookhaven town historian has, and I've obtained a copy of the pages from another researcher) there is a question regarding Salem Corwins parentage. Here it mentions his father was also named Salem Corwin and lost at sea, and that he was married to a Eunice Halleck/Hallock. So are Salem Corwin who died at sea and Eunice (Hallock) Corwin his parents?

      There are still many questions, but as of now, the information under Salem Corwin on your website seems to be an error and therefore incorrect. I will let you know as soon as I learn anything further.

      BELLPORT, EDITOR SIGNAL: One of those curious coincidences - the simultaneous death of friends - recently occurred in this vicinity.
      Soon after the beginning of the present century two sons were born to parents living near this village. These boys were own cousins, and grew up to develop characters very much akin. Both were quiet, unassuming men, and in disposition honest and God-fearing - ever ready to do a kindness for a neighbor, and turning away none "that would borrow." They had hosts of friends and, as far as we know, no enemies. After long lives of usefulness, having passed man's allotted time and nearly reached their four-score years, venerable from age and genuine kindliness of life, they have both passed into eternal life within a few hours of each other. These men - Mr. Salem Corwin, of Bellport, and Mr. Mulford Osborn, of East Patchogue - were "united in life, and in their death were not separated."
      The health of each had been quite poor for several weeks past, and Mr. Osborn had repeatedly asked to see his friend who in turn was greatly distressed at being unable to visit his dear friend and only living relative.
      On Monday morning, May 12, Mr. Corwin quietly and peacefully went home. Within twelve hours his life-long friend had gone to re-join him and rejoice with him over their eternal deliverance.
      The funeral of Mr. Corwin was held at the M. E. Church on the following Wednesday afternoon - Revs. Reeve and Barlett officiating. Among the friends of the deceased we noticed Mrs. Pinckny, of City Island; Mr. George Phail, Mrs. Knapp, Mrs. Ida Dunham and Eugene Ackerly, of Brooklyn; V. B. Hulse. Mr. W. A. Hulse, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Hulse, of Bay Shore; Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hulse and Mrs. H. Newton, of Sayville; and Mr. and Mrs. H. Gordon, of Bridgeport, Conn. 
      The internment was in the beautiful cemetery north of the village. To the many friends of the aged citizens mentioned in this hastily-written sketch we tender the cheering thought: "Seek not the living among the dead; they are not here - they have arisen."

      THE COUSIN CONNECTION -
      [Mulford Osborn is currently (4/2015) not in this database, nor is Hedges Osborn. They were of Bellport Village. While some Osborns were of neighboring Brookhaven hamlet (the principal focus of the Hamlet People Database), these folks appear to have been principally of Bellport. JBD]

      Mulford Osborn's father was Hedges Osborn, who first married Elizabeth Corwin (The Corwin Genealogy, pg. 56).

      Mulford Osborn's mother was Elizabeth Corwin.

      Salem Corwin's mother was Eunice Corwin.

      Elizabeth & Eunice were daughters of Samuel Corwin and Hannah Conklin of Southold (The Corwin Genealogy, pg. 190, Samuel 6; Betsy redirects to Elizabeth upon look-up).

      As long suspected, Salem was illegitimate, which explains why no parentage was given for him in The Corwin Genealogy (pg. 189).

      Nevertheless, Salem was a Corwin - a descendant of Matthias through his mother, Eunice – and by all accounts, a humble and honorable man who passed down a family name we can all be proud of.
