Widow of a Cigar Manufacturer and Philanthropist Dies in Nyack of Heart Attack

NYACK, N.Y., Oct. 21.—Mrs. Emma Stern Wertheim, widow of Jacob Wertheim, New York cigar manufacturer and philanthropist, died today of heart disease at her home here after a short illness. Mrs. Wertheim was 70 years old.

Mrs. Wertheim was the daughter of Meyer and Diana Hunt Stern. Her father was also a noted philanthropist. Her husband was a founder of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies and a contributor to many other charities. Mrs. Wertheim continued the charitable activities after the death of her husband in 1920.

She gave sums to Harvard for research into capital-labor relations, to Jewish charities, and to help crippled children. She was especially active in aiding the Children's Aid Society, Monmouth County (N.J.) Hospital and Bluebird Camp. Mrs. Wertheim was a founder and past president of the Women's Auxiliary of Temple Emanu-El, second vice president of the Hebrew Technical School for girls and vice president of the Temple Sisterhood. She also was responsible for many private benevolences, aside from organized charities.

Surviving are her two daughters, Mrs. Diana W. Whittlesey of Nyack and Dr. Viola W. Bernard, an intern at the Jersey City Medical Center; a step-daughter, Angelika W. Frink, and two stepsons, Maurice Wertheim, New York investment banker, and Albert Wertheim, New York securities broker.
