  • Notes
    • [I have included the generations since John Miller as a suffix to their names, as an aid in sorting out Nathaniel Miller's ancesters. John Miller was the first Miller in East Hampton. Hedges was particularly confusing in the manner in which he recorded the John Miller Family of East Hampton, and this technique assisted me in translating it. Dr. Nathaniel Miller was the seventh generation of Miller's]

[Sineus Miller, of South Haven, was Dr. Nathaniel Miller's first cousin.]

The late Nathaniel Miller, M.D., whose decease occurred at Fireplace on the 7th inst. was born at East Hampton, L.I., in the year 1784. In early youth he gave proof of much intellectual capacity, and in the Academy of his native village, he made rapid progress in all branches of an Academical education. The higher departments of his classical course was pursued under the tuition of the Rev. Lyman Beecher, D.D., then pastor of the Presbyterian church in Easthampton. When these studies were completed, he commenced reading medicine with the distinguished Dr. Gilbert of this county, and afterwards attended the full course of medical lectures, in the city of New York. He commenced the practice of medicine in the State of New Jersey; but preferring his own native county, he became settled in the town of Brookhaven, in which he practiced for more than half a century. He was laborous, and in the early part of his practice, he was eminently successful.

He soon rose in his profession, and won for himself an enviable reputation with medical men throughout the county of Suffolk, and received the confidence and affection of an extended circle of friends.

In the year 1850, he was elected a permanent member of the State Medical Society, of the State of New york, and the same year he was recommended by the society to the Regents of the University for the honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine, which was by them conferred.

His social character was such as greatly to endear him to all who knew him. It seemed part of his very nature to make all happy who came within the circle of his influence. All were made to feel the charm of his character in this respect. He loved peace, and it can truly be said of him, through all his intercourse with the world, that he was a peacemaker indeed.

As a citizen, he was universally beloved and respected, having the entire confidence of all, for his honesty of purpose, integrity of help, and truthfulness of character.

As a public man, he has held various public offices of honor and trust in his county, and in the years 1818 and 1849 he represented his constituents in the Legislature of this State.

As a husband he was kind, gentle, forgiving and faithful.

As a father (and few chilodren had such a father,) it is perhaps s sufficient testimony to his excellence to say, that his children venerated him; and while weeping around his dying bed, in unison rose up before him and called him blessed.

On hios dying bed, he gave to his pastor and friends testimony of his appreciation of the Christian religion, and of his hope for admission into the kingdom of God.

To his family he gave the encouraging assurance that his spirit had gone to rest in Heaven.

The funeral services were attended on the 9th inst., by the Rev. Mr. Cooper and several invited clergymen; also by several of the medical profession, and a large concourse of friends, all of whom signified by their solemn, saddened look, their deep appreciation of his worth, and their bereavement in his loss.
