Norman Fairlie Nelson II
PORTLAND -- A rare man left the world on August 28th. A devoted husband, fun-creating father, inspiring grandfather, sailor, international businessman, civic leader, historian, collector of books and friends, Norm died quietly of cancer after living a full and adventurous life.
Norman Fairlie Nelson II was born in Bronxville, NY on Oct. 13, 1935, the eldest child of Alice Andrews and Alfred Nelson. He spent his childhood in a rural upbringing, sailing and trapping muskrats along the Great South Bay in Brookhaven, N. Y. He commanded his first boat at age 6, and went on to serve as an officer in the U.S. Navy following his graduation from the New York State College of Forestry.
Norm worked for 36 years with Union Camp Corporation, now International Paper, retiring as Vice President of the International Packaging Division. He made lifelong friends around the world and could read a menu in any language. After retiring, he and Sally, his wife of 54 years, continued their consuming wanderlust and traveled the globe especially enjoying Australia and New Zealand. They moved to Portland ten years ago.
His civic leadership was grounded in a desire and duty to give back to a world that had given him so much. Norm volunteered wherever he lived including chairing Children's Aid and Family Services in Ridgewood, N.J. He served on the boards of Friends of the Eastern Prom, the Compass Project, and Greater Portland Landmarks in Portland, and the Cobscook Community Learning Center and Cobscook Bay Company in Washington County.
He passed the traits of love of travel, curiosity, discovery and learning to his children and grandchildren who will remember their Dad and Popi forever.
Norm is survived by his wife Sally Hutt Nelson of Portland, daughter Fraser (Harris, Salt Lake City, Utah), son Pete (Judy, Fall City, Wash.), daughter Molly (John, Cornish), brother Jamie (Julie, Sacramento, Calif.), sister Lucia (John, Easthampton, Mass.) and six grandchildren, Emily, Henry, Charlie, Ruby, Grace and Neah.
A 'Gathering of Friends' will be held on Friday, September 13th at 4:30 p.m., Ocean Gateway, 1 Commercial Street, Portland, Maine.

Alfred and Alice were married at "High Point," 9 Devon Road, Lawrence Park West, Bronxville, NY on Bastille Day, 14 July 1934. Her father, Charles Sperry Andrews wanted to make a trip abroad with Alice's brothers Sperry and David (the youngest, Florie, was to be left in the care of her nurse). The story goes that arrangements were made in rather a hurry so that "CS" could make his trip. A garden wedding, Easter Lilies planted in the garden (in full bloom in July!). Her sister May was her maid of honor and Florie was the bridesmaid.
