Emily was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother, Julia Fairlie Ogden may have been on the way to or returning from a visit to Bristol to see her sister, Mary Fairlie Cooper. (Mary was married to Thomas Apthorpe/Abthorpe Cooper, the actor.) She was the first of four daughters born to Julia and Samuel Gouverneur Ogden. Her sisters were: Grace Priscilla, b. 1840; Florence b. 1849; Virginia b. 1850 (Aunt Ginny - she lived with her sister Emily).

Alfred and Emily were married 21 August 1860 at St. Thomas Church, Ravenswood, Queens, Long Island by the Rev S.W, Sayres. Witness: William Nelson, father of Alfred. The Holy Bible, London ca. 1856, was a wedding present given to Emily by her God-mother, Mary Grace Raoul, daughter of Mary Fairlie (her aunt) and Thomas Abthorpe Cooper.
