Mrs. Emily O. Hawkins died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Edward Danes, on Handsome avenue [Sayville, NY] on Tuesday evening, from the results of gangrene, aged 59 years. Deceased was a native of West Sayville, and was the eldest daughter of the late William Green. She married George Hawkins of Brookhaven, where the couple began housekeeping and where their two daughters were born and reared who are now, respectively. Mrs Fred Gordon, of Brookhaven, and Mrs. Albert Perine, of Brooklyn. Deceased experienced a paralytic stroke some little time ago, causing a weakness of her lower limbs. About six months ago she had a fall, bursting a blood vessel in her leg, which developed blood poisoning and gangrene. The disease advanced rapidly up the limb to the knee, when, more to relieve the patient's suffering than to save life, physicians advised that the limb be amputated at the knee, which operation was performed by Drs. Bird, Robinson and Terry, on February 3, at the home of Mrs. Danes. The operation, in itself, was a success, as it afforded the patient great relief for the time being. But soon the disease manifested itself throughout the entire system which continued until death ensued. The funeral services were held at the house this afternoon, the Rev. M. E. Cunningham of the Brookhaven M. E. Church officiating. Interment was in the Union Cemetery [Sayville].
