Man, 50, Is Killed as Train Wrecks Car in Brookhaven.
BROOKHAVEN—A 50-year-old man was killed here Tuesday night when the small foreign sports car he was driving was struck by a westbound Long Island Rail Road passenger train. The body was found 400 feet from the scene of the accident, and the car was carried 1,500 feet.
Killed instantly was Allen [sic] George Bolt of Meadow Lane, Brookhaven, who was driving his Austin the Old Stump Road crossing here when the accident happened minutes before 9 p.m., shortly after Mr. Bolt had been visiting friends in Brookhaven.
The train's engineer, Clement Madalone of Patchogue, said he saw Mr. Bolt's car too late to stop in time. The six-car passenger train dragged the car to the overpass at South Country Road and pieces of wreckage were thrown onto the road. The train was held up for about an hour while the tracks were cleared.
Mr. Bolt was apparently heading north on Old Stump Road. The side at which he was approaching the tracks is marked by a crossing sign with a bell, but the approach is somewhat dangerous because heavy foliage and trees on the south side of the road. There are no street lights at the crossing, and he apparently failed to hear the signal bell.
The Brookhaven ambulance, with Thomas Lyons and Fred Gillespie as crew, came to the scene. Mr. Lyons, who is postmaster of Brookhaven identified the remains. Also called to the scene was the Brookhaven Fire Department, which under the direction of Frank Simpson, hosed gasoline and oil from the trestle in order to minimize the chance of fire.
Born in England, Mr. Bolt had lived in Brookhaven for eight years. He was married in England a number of years ago but was divorced. He is survived by a brother, Dennis of London; and a nephew, John Allen of Fanwood, N.J.
Mr. Bolt's lifelong occupation and sport was boating.
Cremation will take place at Washington Memorial Park Crematory today, and Mr. Bolt's brother has requested the ashes. The Pettit Funeral Home of Patchogue made the arrangements. A memorial service for Mr. Bolt is planned in the near future at St. James Episcopal Church in Brookhaven.
