B'khaven Girl Dies in NP Auto Accident
BELLPORT—Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Bellport Methodist Church for Miss Linda Lee Gemmell, 22, of South Country Road, Brookhaven hamlet, who was fatally injured Saturday in a one-car accident in North Patchogue.
The Rev. Frederick I. Smith, pastor, officiated. Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery, Brookhaven.
Born March 18, 1940 in Lawrence, Kan., Miss Gemmell had been a resident of Brookhaven for 15 years. She was in her senior year at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., and she was a graduate of Bellport High School. She was a member of the Bellport Methodist Church.
Vehicle Turns Over.
Fifth Precinct Patrolman Arthur J. Benincase, the investigating officer, reported that Miss Gemmell was driving south on Waverly Avenue when the accident occurred about 11 p.m. near Arlington Avenue, North Patchogue. Police said the operator apparently lost control of the sports car on the wet pavement. The vehicle left the road and turned over, police said, and Miss Gemmell was thrown from the auto.
It is believed she went off the road, hit a rut, turned the wheel to get back, and the vehicle turned over.
The owner of the car, Carmelo A. Spirio, 22 of Holtsville, riding as a passenger at the time is an employee at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. He was admitted to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital suffering from shock and contusions of the chest. He was discharged Monday to his home.
Surviving Miss Gemmell are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Gemmell, and a brother, James A., all of Brookhaven. Mr. Gemmell is associate head of the health and physics division (sic) of the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
