Word has been received from Josiah Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Smith of South Haven, that the destroyer Cushing, of which he is a member of the crew, was one of the first ships to search the Pacific for Amelia Earhart's plane.

Danuel G. Smith, aged 54, of Montauk highway, South Haven.

Mr. Smith died Tuesday night in Mather Memorial hospital, Port Jefferson, of injuries sustained about 3 a.m. Sunday, when his pickup truck, which he was driving eastward on Montauk highway, got beyond control, veered across the road and sgtruck a pole on the north side of the road, breaking the pole at the base, according to the report of Brookhaven Town Officer Charles Trywusch.
The accident took place about 200 feet east of Cedar inn in Brookhaven.
Mr. Smith, who was alone in the car, sustained internal injuries and lacerations of the hands and face. He was attended by Dr. Perry Horenstein of Bellport, and was removed to his home. His condition became worse on Tuesday, and he was transported to the hospital.
Mr. Smith, who was born in Bellport, had been employed as a truck driver by J. M. Dominy, Brookhaven fuel dealer.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Heldur Smith; two sons, Pfc. Charles Smith, who is in Texas and Josiah Smith of Paterson, N.J.; a daughter, Mrs. Elsie Martin of Farmingdale, and a brother, Chester Smith of Brookhaven.
The body was removed to the C.W. Ruland Funeral Chapel where it will repose until 2 p.m. tomorrow, when the funeral service will be held in the South Haven Presbyterian Church, the Rev. William H. Netherly, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Brookhaven cemetery.
