Mr. Strickland worked as an evidence clerk for the Suffolk County Police Department. He was also a 54-year member of the Brookhaven Fire department, q commissioner of the Brookhaven fire district, and a former chief (1979-1980). He is survived by his wife, Cecilia V. Strickland; his son John E. Strickland II; his mother, May Sterns, and by his four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Sticker, and by his father, Willis A. Strickland. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Ruland Funeral Home in Patchogue. Visiting hours, as well as a funeral service, took place at the Brookhaven Fire House.
