Harry W. Dayton, aged 75, who retired some years ago after having served 37 years in the Coast Guard, in which he rose to the rank of chief boatswain's mate, died early Tuesday at his home, 231 Grove avenue, Patchogue, after an extended illness.
Mr. Dayton, or Captain Dayton as he was often called, was a lifelong resident of Patchogue, born here on January 7, 1869.
Most of his Coast Guard service centered around the Bellport Coast Guard station.
In January, 1942, he and his wife, Mrs. Mabel Payne Dayton, observed their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Dayton died six months later.
Mr. Dayton leaves eight daughters, Mrs. Ethel Jones, Mrs. Sue Cochrane, Mrs. Grayce Lessey, Mrs. Viola Roberts, Mrs. Muriel Skinner, Mrs. Vera Satterley, all of Patchogue, Mrs. Marie Mayer of Hempstead, and Mrs. Dorothy Muka of New Brunswick, N.J.; five sons, Charles Dayton of Eastport, Harry Dayton, Jason Dayton, both of Patchogue, David Lloyd Dayton, boatswain's mate, first class, who is stationed at the Bellport Coast Guard station, and Pfc. Albert Dayton, stationed at Camp Ellis, Ill; 20 grandchildren, six of whom are in military service, and two great-grandchildren.
He belonged to Patchogue post, American Legion, whose members will hold a service at 8:30 o'clock tonight at the Dayton home.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Dayton home, the Rev. James A. Ker, pastor of the First Baptist church of Patchogue, officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Grove cemetery.
