William Nelson, for many years the head of the firm of William Nelson & Sons, shipping merchants, of this City, died suddenly at Ravenswood, Long Island, on Tuesday last. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1799 and in his early life was a cotton merchant at Liverpool. In 1835 he met with reversals, and becoming involved beyond recovery, emigrated to this country, where he entered the house of Silas Holms & Co., of Old-slip. He time he became the principal owner of the Holms line of packets to New Orleans. In 1861 he retiged from business with an ample fortune, having faithfully paid all his debts incurred in England. He was a man of upright character and was highly esteemed in the business circles of the city.,
