A head-on collision between a sports car and a cement truck at about noon Friday on Long Island Avenue, Yaphank, resulted in two technicians at Brookhaven National Laboratory being fatally injured, according to a police report.
Police said killed instantly in the collision was Richard M. Engelhardt, 21, of Newey Lane, Brookhaven, while James S. Holiday, 27, of 144 Long Neck Boulevard, Riverhead, died later the same dat at 3:55 p.m. at the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
A third BNL technician, Roger Slade, 23, of 199 Lakeland Avenue, Sayville, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said. A hospital official said yesterday Mr. Slade was making progress in his recovery and was reported as being in "fair condition."
Police said Mr. Engelhardt was traveling west in his car when it was in collision with the eastbound truck driven by Arthur Allen, 37, of 17 Clearfield Place, Huntington, at a sharp curve on Long Island Avenue. The truck is owned by the Twin-County Transit Mix Co. of Terry Road, Smithtown. Police reported Mr. Allen was not injured.
Mr. Engelhardt was born in New Hyde Park and lived in Brookhaven for 17 years. He was a graduate of Bellport High School, and a member of the South Bay Scooter Club of Bellport.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Pearl C. Engelhardt of Brookhaven; two brothers, William of Hampton Bays, and Robert, of Middle Island; and one sister, Mrs. Roger Moreland of Yaphank.
Funeral services were held Monday atr the Robertaccio Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard W. Gray of St. James Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was at Oaklawn Cemetery, Brookhaven.
