'Blue Shutters' Closed:
Bancrofts Move to City

BROOKHAVEN—This community lost two of its best-liked and most public spirited residents this week when Dr. and Mrs. Frederic W. Bancroft closed their home, "Blue Shutters," on South Country road to move to New York city. Dr. Bancroft left last Thursday, by Brookhaven ambulance for Doctors hospital while Mrs. Bancroft remained behind to close the house Monday.
Summer and weekend residents of Brookhaven for about 30 years, the Bancrofts moved from their New York city home to Brookhaven in 1956. Dr. Bancroft had turned over his practice to Dr.Edward G. Stanley-Brown. That same year, Dr. Bancroft was awarded the Clement Cleveland award for outstanding service and devotion to the New York Cancer committee and for instruction to both the public and medical profession on the treating of cancer.
In preparation for retiring to this area as a consulting surgeon, a completely equipped office and examining room had been installed in Blue Shutters. A distinguished doctor and surgeon, Dr. Bancroft also maintained an informal practice at the Bancroft summer home in Sandy cove on Digby Neck, Nova Scotia.
A native of Denver, Colo., Dr. Bancroft first got a B.A. degree from the University of Buffalo before receiving his medical degree from Johns Hopkins. After internship at Sloan maternity and Roosevelt hospitals, he joined the staff of New York hospital.
As a major, he was in charge of a mobile operating unit in France during the first World war. He was afterward associated with Lincoln hospital, then Fifth Avenue hospital where he was surgical director and finally surgical director of Beth David hospital, where he is now surgical director emeritus.
Dr. Bancroft was an associate professor of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He became a lieutenant-colonel in World War II in the department of civilian defense. He is a fellow of the International Surgical society, honorary fellow of the Society of Surgery of Trauma, fellow of the American Surgical, Southern Surgical, Western Surgical and New York Surgical societies and a member of the Pilgrims and of the Sons of Colonial Wars.
Dr. and Mrs. Bancroft have maintained great interest in the affairs and organizations of Brookhaven. Dr. Bancroft has been president of the Village association. Mrs. Bancroft has recently retired from the chairmanship of the Brookhaven-South Haven Women's auxiliary to Brookhaven Memorial hospital, in which capacity she served a two-year term.
The Bancrofts have two children, Frederic W. Bancroft, Jr., of Alexandria, Va. who is with a government agency in Washington, D.C., and a daughter, Mrs. Bob Gowin of New Haven, Conn., whose husband has been on the faculty of Bridgeport university and is now associated with the University of Chicago where the Gowins are moving. Dr. Frederic Bancroft, 82, Dies; Retired Surgeon and Educator
Former Hospital Director and Medical Professor—Wrote Articles on Field
Dr. Frederic Wolcott Bancroft, a leading surgeon here who retired in 1955, died Wednesday in the Veterans Administration Hospital, at First Avenue and 24th Street. He was 82 years old and lived at 271 Avenue C.
Dr. Bancroft was formerly surgical director of the Fifth Avenue Hospital and Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, and had been director of surgery of Beth David Hospital. He had also served as senior consulting surgeon at the Veterans Administration Hospital in the Bronx.
His patients included the late John Foster Dulles, who was Secretary of State; the late Eleutherios Venizelos, a Premier of Greece, and the late James W. Gerard, an Ambassador to Germany.
Dr. Bancroft, who was born in Denver, graduated withan A.B. degree from Stamford University in 1902 and received his M.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins University in 1906. After serving as an interne at Roosevelt Hospital and Sloane Hospital for Women here he began practice in 1909. In World War I he served in the Army Medical Corps in France.
He was formerly associate clinical professor of surgeryat the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University and clinical professor of surgery at New York Medical College and was associated with many hospitals in the New York area.
Dr. Bancroft was theeditor in chief of five volumes of a work called "Surgical Treatment" and author of about 80 articles on surgery.
He was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a member of its founders' group. He also was a founder and had served as vice chairman of New York City Cancer Committee and was a member of the several medical societies, including the New York Gastroenterological Society, of which he was a former president.
Dr. Bancroft was a member of the National Society of Colonial Wars and the University Club.
Surviving are his widow, the former Dorothy Wandel; a sone Frederic Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Gowin of Ithaca, N.Y., and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 3 P.M. tomorrow at the Universal Funeral Chapel, Lexington Avenue and 52d Street.
