Joel and Sarah “left North Haven 4 May 1799 in ox-carts for Ohio. They originally settled 30 miles west of Cleveland. Sarah was treated well by Indians because she fed a group of them who came once when she was alone in her cabin. The family moved to Buffalo in the spring of 1809. He commanded a company in the Beaver Dam fight in the 1812 War. His house was burned when Buffalo was taken by the British.” Children of Joel and Sarah (Dayton) Thorp, the first four born in North Have, the others in Ohio: i.
