The body of Benjamin Gildersleeve, of Patchogue, was found frightfully mangled on the tracks of the Long Island Railroad, near the freight house about 5 o'clock last Saturday morning [26 Dec 1903]. The first engine from the roundhouse backed over the body of the man who had ev9idently been asleep on the track. No doubt he was instantly killed and never realized the accident. The engineer evidently was ignorant of the fact that he had run over a man, the body having been found by Night Watchman Hanstein half an hour after the engine had passed over the body, which was still warm. He was not identified until 8 o'clock in the morning. Dr. W. S. Bennett was called and notified Undertakers Sharp & Danes, who removed the body. The man had been seen in street under the influence of liquor the evening before and his wife says he had not been home. Gildersleeve, who formerly lived at Riverhead, was in the employ of E. Bailey & Sons, and leaves a wife and two children. At the inquest Coroner E. S. Moore, of Bay Shore, rendered a verdict in accordance with the above facts.
