Stirling Found Dead, Waverly Ave. Cottage
Former N.Y. Fireman
Believed to have been dead at least two days, John B. Stirling, aged 79, was found Wednesday afternoon in the small bungalow where he had lived alone just west of the fork of Waverly avenue and Holbrook road, North Patchogue.
Mr. Stirling, a retired lieutenant of the New York Fire department, who had lived here about 25 years, was discovered by Mrs. Minnie Whiteneck of 111-36 143rd street, Jamaica, who had called at the home in reference to the sale of some land, the police say.
Receiving no response to her knocking on the door, Mrs. Whiteneck enlisted the aid of Harold Mott, a nearby resident, who pried open a window. Mr. Stirling was lying in bed.
Dr. Willetts W. Gardner of East Main street, Patchogue, who was called by police, pronounced death. Doroner Grower A. Silliman of Sayville said death was due to natural causes and said it had occurred several days before. Police said neighbors reported having seen Mr. Stirling over the week-end.
A native of Kenning Partl, Scottland, Mr. Stirling leaves a brother, Peter Stirling, and a sister, Mrs. Isabella Kennedy, both of Brooklyn.
A funeral service was held yesterday at Ruland's chapel, North Ocean avenue, Patchogue, the Rev. Harold C. Jones, pastor of the Bellport Methodist church, officiating. Interment was made this morning in Evergreen cemetery, Queens.
