He was not found in either the 1880 or 1900 U.S. Census. He may be the Frederic B. Hedges, recorded as a Civil War veteran, a private in Company C, 1st Regiment, New York Marine Artillery (alternate name Hodge).

      Another of the respected old men of Brookhaven village, Frederick B. Hedges, has died, at the age of 85. The funeral was held Thursday 26th ntr., from the Presbyterian Chapel, the Rev. Mr. Tillinghast officiating. Mr. Hedges had lived in Brookhaven many years, and was well known as a boat-builder and ship carpenter. He was born in East Haddam, Conn. He worked with Webb at ship-building in the forties, and was sent to Florida to select suitable live oak for the United States warships of those days. He leaves a widow and one son, Frederic Hedges.
