An Ermine Wrap Reported Stolen Turns Up Again
The white ermine wrap, valued at $2,700, that was reported to have mysteriously disappeared December 29 from the home of its owner, Mrs. John Rochester on Honey Lane, South Haven, made its reappearance under equally mysterious circumstances under a flight of stairs in the Rochester home.
Brookhaven Police Chief Edward N. Bridge, who revealed yesterday that the coat was found last Saturday by Mr. Rochester, husband of the owner, said that the Brookhaven and State police investigation of the case would be continued.
After the reported "theft," police learned that the wrap disappeared from a second floor closet in the large Rochester home, "The Cedars," and that other apparel, including a sealskin coat, a black velvet dress and white satin pumps, owned by Mrs. Rochester, showed evidence of having been placed in the closet for storage. All these articles were found tucked away in the closet at the time the ermine wrap was missed, the police say they were told.
After the coat was recovered, it was found to be stained in several places. It was then forwarded to the State police laboratory in Schenectady for examination.
During the last several weeks, police have been checking up on all persons formerly employed at the Rochester home.
