CALEB W. DAVIS, 85, of Post Road, Wakefield, an antiques business owner, died yesterday at home after a four-month battle with liver cancer.
He was the husband of Barbara H. Davis. They had been married for 48 years. Born in London, he was a son of the late Leslie A. Davis and Catherine Carman Davis. He was educated in several European countries, where his father worked for the U.S. Consular Service. He returned home and graduated from Amherst college in 1940.
He was an antiques dealer and furniture restorer, and until his retirement, the proprietor of the Dove & Distaff, an antiques store and upholstery workshop on Main Street, Wakefield.
He had served on the South Kingstown Historic District Commission for 23 years, including many years as chairman, and was active in the the Main Street Downtown Merchants Association.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, landing at Normandy on D-Day and serving as a member of the Counter Intelligence Corps with the Second Armored Division.
After the war, he had lived in Now York City's Greenwich Village and received a master's degree from Columbia University, writing for various encyclopedia publishers, including Colliers.
He was a member of the Willow Dell Beach Club, and a former member of its board of directors.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Helynna Brooke of San Francisco and Carla H. Davis of Wakefield; two sisters, Aino Pulcipher of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Adele Sauramps of La Grande Motte, France; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
