Emmett S Hawkins Killed. A South Haven Man and Not the Genial Former Supervisor and Postmaster.

Emmott S. Hawkins, a resident of South Haven, L.I., was killed from the accidental discharge of a gun near his home Thursday of last week. The body was found lying at the edge of a swamp with a terrible wound through the swtomach and the gun lying near by.

Mr. Hawkins married Miss Mattie Whitson, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Smith Whitson, of Greenlawn. Miss Whitson at one time was a valued employee of The Long Islander office.

It is believed Mr. Hawkins went out on the trail of foxes which had been ranging unpleasantly close to the house and somehow fell on his gun, causing it to discharge. Mrs. Hawkins was visiting at Greenlawn. Fred Raynor, a neighbor, who customarily get milk from Mr. Hawkins, sent his daughter there and she found nobody home.

When later visits disclosed the facts that the cows were unmilked and the poultry unfed something amiss was feared and the matter reported at the residence of the Rev. F. E. Allen, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, in which Mr. Hawkins was active. Geo. Miller broke into the Hawkins residence and when nobody was found there a search of the country was instituted.

Mr. Hawkins was 56 years old, a carpenter by trade. He spent practically all his life in South Haven, coming of an old family there. He leaves only his wife. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the home at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Mr. Allen officiating, with the interment in the Hawkins private cemetery. Coroner Moore found a verdict of accidental death.
