An Old Man Suffocated.
The News received a telephone message yesterday afternoon from S. H. Conn, of New York, to the effect that Mr. John Bonehill lies at the point of death in the New York Hospital. The old gentleman, who is 75 years of age, spends most of his time at the summer home of the family, Deer Hill Farm, north of the village; but went to the city a few days ago to spend the holidays with his granddaughters. The latter whose stage names are Miss Leua Hibbon and Dappa Grey, are playing at Webber and Fields and live at 123 West 23rd St. The old gentleman got up some time during Wednesday night, turned on the gas and attempted to strike a light, but was unable to find a match a match and went back to bed without turning if off again. He was found in an unconscious condition at 4 o'clock yesterday morning and removed to the hospital where the physicians pronounced his recovery doubtful. Bessie Bonehill, her husband and son are now playing a theatrical engagement in London.

"Undertaker W. N. Raynor brought to Sayville to-day for interment in the Union Cemetery the body of William Bonehill, father of Miss Bessie Bonehill, the actress, which was placed in a receiving vault in Woodhaven [Cemetery, Queens, NY] last December."
An earlier article recorded his name as John.

This report giving his name as John, and the one dated June 1901 are both likely in error. Richard Bonehill, in an email dated 5 January 2010, comments:
"How very strange . Elias was definitely Bessie's father as stated on her birth certificate . I have checked the other documents relating to Elias (marriage certificate etc) but no other Christian names appear. The first article appears to be correct on all facts except his name...."
