*The parentage of Justice Joseph Brown, who d. in Southold Town, 14 Jan. 1751, has never been satisfactorily accounted for. Joseph Brown, Sr., d 11 Dec., 1739 (Salmon Record.)
Griffin says that Justice Joseph Brown was son of Israel Brown, and both were noble hearted men. There is no evidence whatever of any Israel Brown of Southold at so early a date; nevertheless the names Selah and Jeremiah, of two of the childrn of Joseph Brown, lead to the belief that they might have been of Reeve, or Vail ancestry.
Joseph Brown m. Dorothy Tuthill (John[5], John[4], Henry[3], Henry[2], John[1]). His will, Liber 17, p.412, N.Y. City Wills, names his wife Dorothy, his das. married and unmarried, calling but one, Dorothy, by name; his sons Benjamin and Joseph, and his three youngest sons, Joshua, Selah and Jeremiah, and his brother Daniel Brown. Benjamin, named above, m. Mary Tuthill. It is doubtless his will dated 22 April 1774, proved the 10 May 1774, which mentions his wife Abigail, his children: Gershom; George; Israel; Mary; Jemima; Elizabeth and Bethia. (Liber 29, p. 396, N.Y. City Wills.)
Joseph Brown, Jr., b. in 1731, m. Mehitable, da. of Jeremiah Vail 4th, and his wife Elizabeth Youngs. Mehitable was b. 30th May, 1738. An account of their 18 children will be found in Griffin's Journal.
Dorothy, da. of Joseph and Dorothy Brown is supposed to have married James Brown; it is not proven fact yet. See Dorothy, da. of Capt. Richard Brown, No. 6.
Hannah, da. of Joseph and Dorothy Brown, is said to have married Joseph Youngs.
Abigail, da of Joseph and Dorothy Brown, b. probably 1734-'37, was the 1st wife of John King, Jr.[5] of Southold, (John[4], Samuel[3], Samuel[2], William[1]). He was b. 18 Dec., 1727, married 13 March, 1754, d. 14 July 1792). (See Pdigree of King, of Salem.)
According to Chad. Brown, Genealogical Memoirs, and Mailman's History of Shelter Island, Daniel Brown, (Supervisor of the Town of Shelter Island, in 1745, and thereafter,) was a descendant of Chad. Brown family of Providence, R. I

The entries in the Salmon Record regarding the Daniel Browns of Southold are: "Daniel Brown m. Pheobe Wiggins, 13 Sept, 1742." "Daniel Youngs Brown, drowned 14 Sept., 1750." "Daniel Brown's wife Experience, d. 24 Sept., 1752." "Daniel Brow, Jr., d. 4 July, 1754."

... The Southold census of 1698 shows that he [Walter] was living without a wife, but his two sons, Daniel and Joseph are named. Who his [Walter's] first wife was and when she died is unknown....

Joseph Browne, s. of Walter Browne, was known as Justice Browne, meaning Justice of the Peace, which was, in Colonial days, an appointive office and one that was an agency of the King. That he was the son son of Walter Browne is determined by the fact that he is given in the Southold census of 1698 with Walter and Daniel Browne as being one of a family by themselves and also in his will made in 1751, he mentions his brother, Daniel, who is known to have been the son of Walter.

He m. Dorothy, dau. of John and Mehitable (Wells) Tuthill. She d. Feb. 4, 1774. His will is dated May 30, 1751, and proved July 16, 1751. In it, he gives his wife, Dorothy, use of all his real estate during her widowhood, except a piece of land on the north side of Oyster Pond Neck, which he gives to his s. Joshua. He mentions his children as: Dorothy, Joshua, Benjamin and unnamed "Daughters married and unmarried+ also Joseph, Selah, and Jeremiah and makes dau., Dorothy, and brother, Daniel, his executors.
