1401 [There is an International Genealogical Index (IGI) record which indicates a marriage between an Ann Leek and what appears to be this Nelson Gerard. I believe it likely that the IGI record IS IN ERROR. When I was transcribing the 1850 census records for Fire Place, I thought it possible that Kezia was a first wife to Nelson, who died shortly after 1850. And that he then married Ann Leek. However, now that I have transcribed the 1860 census, I find that Kezia is still living in the household, and that there have been additional children. Some of the children of Nelson and Kezia have similar names to the IGI record for Nelson and Ann, others do not. And their birthdates do not well match. There is no mention of an Ann in the 1860 census. I have therefore deleted Ann Leek and the children ascribed to her from the Hamlet People database.] Gerard, Nelson Bell ^ (I714)

1402 [There is not a consensus on Sarah's birth surname, and therefore should, for now, be considered speculative.] Howell, Sarah > (I4476)

1403 [There is some possibility that this Nathaniel Tooker found in the South Haven Presbyterian Church Session Minutes may be the same as the Nathaniel found in the 1860 United States census of Fire Place.] Tooker, Nathaniel ^ (I22699)

1404 [There is the possibility of confusion between two Thomas Reeve's (or Reeves) families living in Southold at the same time, both with wives named Bethia. The Thomas Reeve of our interest, who was the father of the Rev. Abner Reeve, is sometimes referred to as "blacksmith" Thomas Reeve, while the other Reeve was referred to as Lieutenent Thomas Reeve(s). Lt. Thomas's wife Bethiah died two years before Blacksmith Thomas's. I have, in general, accepted Wesley Baker's (1970) sorting out of the two families.] Reeves, Thomas (III) > (I5833)

1405 [There is uncertainity as to whether Abner was a son of Abner Reeve. Some assign him to Manassah Reeve of New Jersey, as Abner seemes to have named a son Manassay.] Reeve, Abner ^ (I5851)

1406 [There is uncertainty as to Deborah's birth surname. Some sources suggest Reeves (including a genealogy chart at the Southold Historical Society). Others suggest Fordham.] Fordham, Deborah (I4582)

1407 [There is uncertainty as to whether Daniel is a son of Joshua Tuthill and Hannah Reeves. See Bob Sweezey for discussion.] Tuthill, Daniel (I3871)

1408 [There is uncertainty as to whether Deliverance is the daughter of Joshua Tuthill and Hannah Reeves. There is also speculation that she is the same person as Deborah Tuthill. See Bob Sweezey for discussion.] Tuthill, Deliverance (I3869)

1409 [There is uncertainty with Edmund in the IGI record, the resolution of which is outside the scope of this project.] Fanning, Edmund (I6416)

1410 [There seems to be some confusion regarding this person, and information on this family appears to be unreliable. See Bob Sweezey for discussion.] Terry, Daniel (I24741)

1411 [There seems to be uncertainty from various sources concerning Mary's birt dates and the date of her marriage to John Budd. If this date is accepted, she married at twelve or younger. If one is serious about this line, you should not rely on this entry. JD] Horton, Mary (I4364)

1412 [These are the birth and death dates given in Bartow, making her 104 years of age when she died.] Clement, Mary (I656)

1413 [This entry in the Hamlet People Database is because Robert A. Russell was recorded in the trustee records of the South Haven Presbyterian Church. He likely was not a resident of either Fire Place or South Haven Hamlets, and most likely was a resident of Yaphank. The only reference I've found for Russell is this enigmatic notation in the entry for Robert Hawkins Gerard (see), found in Yaphank as it is, and was, and will be ..., by L. Beecher Homan:
"Coalesced in partnership with William Sidney Smith (see), Mr. Gerard established a woolen factory in combination with his milling business business*. A crisis in financial circles, and the abdication of Robert Russell, manager, caused a suspension.
"Pulusory movements since originated to remodel it into a cotton factory, and why the project never matured the orginators solely know."

* Gerard built and was the proprietor of mills on the Upper Yaphank Lake, that included a fulling mill.
Russell, Robert A. † (I8849)

1414 [This John Post (Jr.) is reported to be the ancestor of the Post's of Bellport, NY. I have been unable yet to find the lineage connection. John, Hiram, and Nathan Post mentioned by Bigelow may be this John's son and grandsons. This John was reportedly born 1732 and died 1799. The John recorded by Bigelow for the shipyard transactions occurred in 1833. Hiram and Nathan were found in the 1850 census in what appears to be Bellport, with birth years of about 1800 and 1804 respectively. The John mentioned by Bigelow was not found in Bellport or the Town of Brookhaven in 1850. This suggests that the John recorded by Bigelow may be Hiram and Nathan's father (and this John's son), who had died by 1850. (see Bigelow, p.19)] Post, John Jr. (I4940)

1415 [This may be the Dorothy Goodwin born 4 Jan 1896 in Brooklyn, NY and married 12 Jun 1916. In the 1900 census they lived at 317 Hancock St., Brooklyn, Ward 23. Father was Gilman, b. Nov 1856, NY. Mother Josephine, b. Nov 1856. They had seven children, of which three were living in 1900: Maude E., b April 1880; Edith J. b. Sept 1881; and Dorothy b. Jan 1896. I was unable to read the original census record for 1910, but it is said to record Josephine A. Goodwin, age 52, widowed, living with daughter Maude E., age 29 and son-in-law George F. Dobson, laborer at newspaper, age 32, and grandson George F., age 8. Dorothy, age 14, was living with her sister and brother-in-law. While it seems likely that these census entries may be for Dorothy Goodwin, wife of Rea Irvin, I have not yet found a positive linkage.] Goodwin, Dorothy (I9233)

1416 [This Robert S. Albin may be the same person as Albert I. Albin (aged 29) enumerated in the 1870 census of Fire Place. Albert's wife was recorded as Lucinda B., aged 20. Albert lived in the same approximate neighborhood. In 1870, Albert and Lucinda were recorded as having a daughter Annie B. (aged 1), but no other family members. There was no Robert and Lucinda Albin recorded in the 1870 census of Fire Place. However, because there are significant differences in the enumeration records of 1870 and 1880, I have kept them as separate entries.]

-- MERGED NOTE ------------

[This Albert I. Albin may be the same person as Robert Albin enumerated in the 1880 census of Fire Place. Robert's wife was recorded as Lucinda B. Albin. Robert and family lived in the same approximate neighborhood. In 1880, Robert and Lucinda were recorded as having two male children, none of whom were named Annie, one of whom was born before 1870. Albert Albin was not found in either the 1860 or 1880 censuses. However, because there are significant differences in the enumeration records of 1870 and 1880, I have kept them as separate entries. (Elbert Albin recorded as living nearby in both the 1870 and 1880 censuses was clearly not the same person as this Albert.)]
Albin, Robert S. ^ (I1335)

1417 [This Samuel Terrill (or Terrell) of Milford, CT, and his line, are included in the Hamlet People database because of circumstantial evidence that he may be the Samuel Terrill who originally purchased Yaphank Neck (modern South Haven Hamlet, NY) in 1688 from the indigenous native Wopehege. While one source has suggested that the Samuel Terrill who made this purchase was a son of Thomas Terrell of Southold, NY, I have not found any other source which supports this suggestion, nor have I yet found a single Samuel Terrill of Southold which could be the Samuel Terrill who purchased Yaphank Neck. Samuel's brother Thomas apparently does remove to East Hampton, NY for a while before finally settling in Elizabeth, NJ; but I have found no children of him named Samuel; and they would be too young in any event to have made the 1688 Yaphank Neck purchase. Another source suggested that Samuel Terrell was of "East Hampshire," (England?) without any supporting evidence.]

[Some compilations combine this Samuel Terrill (i) with his son Samuel (ii), eliminating a generation. Recorded here is the genealogy as presented by Susan Woodruff Abbott. Given the c. 1647 birth date for this Samuel, the 1710 marriage date of "Samuel" to Abigail Baldwin, and the birth date of their son Samuel (10 Sep 1711), it seems more likely that there is an intermediate "Samuel" generation, i.e., that Abbott is likely correct.]

[A correspondent, Libbet Terrell, suggested that Samuel had a son, Adam Terrill (see), perhaps based on inferences from an unsourced notes by Josef Schrabal on the history of Center Moriches.]
Terrell, Samuel (i) ^ (I7619)

1418 [Timothy may have had more than two children (Hedges). Internet sources record his mother as Temperance Conklin without attribution. See note for his father, Timothy.] Miller, Timothy (I4676)

1419 [Tuthill recorded 10 Jun 1815.] Hawkins, Phebe Ann ^ (I2892)

1420 [Van Lith's reading of the gravestone is Aug 13, 1852, not Aug 19, 1852 reported by Hawkins. Stone is moderately worn, and by a stretch, the 3 could be a 9. If a 9, the birthdate would also change.] Hawkins, Charles Willett ^ (I1204)

1421 [While Elisha appears in the 1810 census, he was not found in the 1820 census, suggesting that he died in the decennial.] Miller, Elisha (I675)

1422 [While Eliza is listed in the Town of Brookhaven Historian's Cemetery List as being buried in the Corwin Family Cemetery, in December 2005, her gravestone could not be found.] Corwin(), Eliza ^ (I3354)

1423 [While FamilySearch: Ancestral file indicates he died on Shelter Island, there is much evidence to indicate that once he settle in Fire Place, he lived out his live there. He is interred in the Miller family burying ground in Fire Place (now Brookhaven), Miller, Nathaniel Sr. (I665)

1424 [While he appeared in the 1860 census, he did not appear with the family in 1870, where an infant George was found.] Champlin, George H. (I7734)

1425 [While her gravestone is adjacent to that of Harvey and Bertha Fassett, I have not proved that she is their daughter, but it seems highly probable.] Fassett, Helen M. < (I7116)

1426 [While his wife, Minnie, is recorded as residing in Brookhaven Hamlet in 1930, he is not recorded, suggesting that he may have died in the interval between 1920 and 1930.] Newey, Charles Leonard ^ (I2821)

1427 [While I have indicated Alsop to be Patience's son, she would have been about 44 at his birth. While not impossible, it's not all that likely. Perhaps he is her grandson. See also note for Patience.] Corwin, Alsop H. (I502)

1428 [While I have recorded Barnabas as being Azel's son, the relationship is ambiguous -- the evidence being that he was living in Azel's household at the time of the 1850 census.] Hawkins, Barnabas B. ^ (I411)

1429 [While IGI indicated that her birth surname was Floman, Chapman "Portraits and Biographical Record" indicated her birth surname was Davis. I have no idea of the source for the IGI entry, but I suspect that the material in Chapman was based on interviews with the subject, Charles M Woodruff, her son. I have therefore elected to use Davis.]

[While I have recorded here that her parents were George Davis and Patience Corwin, based on an entry found at LongIslandGenealogy.com, I have not yet found any collaborating sources. The connection should therefore be considered speculative. See also the general note for Patience Corwin.]
Davis, Sarah Ann ^ (I972)

1430 [While it is not proved that this is the same Anders Myhr who was the son of Andrew Finch Myhr, it seems likely.] Myhr, Anders Finch Jr. ^ (I9206)

1431 [While likely, it is not certain that this death date, found in the Social Security death Index, is the present Edward Gillespie.] Gillespie, Edward ^ (I10344)

1432 [While not proved, the parents of Sarah A. Tuthill recorded in the 1850 Fire Place (now Brookhaven Hamlet) census were likely Elisha Tuthill (b. 8 Feb 1805) and Harriet Rogers (b. 13 Jul 1807). In Alva M. Tuttle's Tuthill compilation, she would be the only likely candidate. She was of the correct age, her mother's maiden name was Rogers, and the family was of the Eastport/Remensburg/Speonk area 15 miles to the east of Fire Place. The exact relationship to Thomas Rogers is unclear.] Tuthill, Sarah A. ^ (I408)

1433 [While not proved, this is probably the Frances Gerard, a daughter of Richard Gerard and Nancy Carter, mentioned in Bigelow.] Gerard, Frances (Fanny) ^ (I116)

1434 [While one source records without attribution that Elisha's wife was Abigail Abernathy, I am suspicious of this claim; one of Elisha's sons is named Tuthill.] Tuthill, Abigail > (I676)

1435 [While recorded as Lizzie in Alva Tuttle's compilation, her given name was likely Elizabeth.] Halsey, Lucy Isabella (I5335)

1436 [While Robert Gordon Clarke records Angenel as being born in 1846, and married in 1868, she does not appear in her parents household in the 1850 census. She does, however, appear in the 1860 census, with an age of 12.] Mott, Angenel < (I7128)

1437 [While she appeared in James's household in the 1850 census, she does not appear in the 1860 census, suggesting her death in the intervening decennial. The gravestone in the Barteau Cemetery is therefore likely her's.] Terry, Elizabeth ^ (I937)

1438 [While some art information web sites indicate that she had two children, I have found no documentation that she had any children or that she was ever legally married. She was, however, known to have been a close companion to Ida Haskell; the relationship is shown here as spousal.] Boughton, Alice ^ (I8842)

1439 [While some sources indicate his surname as Owens, Hawkins II indicates Owen.] Owen, Daniel L (I541)

1440 [While some sources record her birthplace as Brooklyn, Kings, NY, the family was still living in Yaphank at the time of the 1940 census.] Booth, Nancy Diana (I7988)

1441 [While source reference is ambiguous as to whether his place of death was theTown of Brookhaven or the Hamlet of Brookhaven, other anecdotal evidence is the Hamlet. The Henry Hand family apparenty were living with the Burnett's in the Burnett house (Hist Hand, Henry Goodrich ^ (I1032)

1442 [While the 1939 Hawkins genealogy reported that her maiden name was Smith, the 2001 Supplement changed it to unknown.] Cassidy, Leonice Evelyn (I1781)

1443 [While the evidence is strong that this Elizabeth Hutchinson's parents were Benjamin Hutchinson and Mary Dominy, I have not yet found a source which confirms this parentage. Benjamin Hutchinson and Mary Dominy had a daughter Elizabeth born in 1744 in Southold. Peter Tuthill marries an Elizabeth Hutchinson, b. 1744 in Southold. I suppose it's possible that there were two Elizabeth Hutchinson's born of different families the same year, but it seems unlikely.] Hutchinson, Elizabeth > (I4231)

1444 [While the Town of Brookhaven Historians Cemetery List records 21 Oct 1793, the gravestone marking appears to be 24 Oct 1793.] Rose, Nathan Jr. ^ (I647)

1445 [While there is uncertainty concerning the birth and death dates found on Lester's and Fanny's grave stone, it seems to me to be a bit more likely that the death dates are more likely to be correct than the birth dates.] Smith, Storrs Lester "Rock" (I5198)

1446 [While William resided in the household of John L. Ireland in 1850 and 1860, his relationship is unclear. At first blush one might say that he is John L.'s son, but other sources do not indicate that John L. had a son William. He might also be John. L.'s nephew, the son of his brother William; again, other sources do not indicate that John's brother William had a son William. Further investigation is required.] Ireland, William F. N. ^ (I21176)

1447 [While Zachariah is reported to have had two wives, it is uncertain from which wives the children were issue. They have therefore been assigned to unknown.] Bostwick, Zachariah > (I4751)

1448 [Who is Ann Eliza Gildersleeve?
The 1850 Census indicated an Ann E. Gildersleeve (age 2) living in the household of Benjamin (age 54) and Mary (age 59) Gildersleeve. This child seems too young to be their child. In 1860, an Eliza Gildersleeve (age 12 same age as Ann E.), isiving in Benjamin and Mary's household.
While another source indicates that Benjamin's son, Jonas G., had a daughter Mary A. E. Gildersleeve, it not certain that this Mary A. E. Gildersleeve is the same person as Ann E. or Eliza -- despite the matching middle initials. By 1860, Jos was living in another household in the Hamlet, with Jane, probably his wife.
While it was likely that Eliza of the 1860 census was the same as the Ann E. of the 1850 census, it seems less likely that she was Jonas' daughter -- or in 1860 it would seem that she should living in Jonas', not Benjamin's, household.]
Gildersleeve, Ann Eliza ^ (I104)

1449 [Who was Henry Hulse? While there are many Hulse's in the Hamlet and nearby communities, I have yet to find a connection to this Henry Hulse.] Hulse, Henry ^ (I755)

1450 [Who was the Bethia Hawkins residing in the household of Azel Hawkins in the 1850 census? Both Hawkins volumes do not give a Bethia or Elizabeth as a daughter of Azel Hawkins and Elizabeth Ryder. Nor do I find a likely candidates among Elizabeth Hawkins' in the Hawkins genealogies. Of course, the surname given in the 1850 census may be a married name. If she was Azel's daughter, he would have been about 17 at the time of her birth; there is also a discrepancy between Bethia's age as given in the 1850 census (46, <1804>) and Azel's and Elizabeth's marriage date (17 Jan 1808). Her given name was probably Elizabeth, with Bethia used as a nickname If she were a daughter, the nickname would have distinguished her from her mother. For now, I've included Bethia as a child of Azel, but this relationship is far from certain. ] Hawkins, Bethia (Elizabeth ?) ^ (I433)
